Mother Earth, Mother teacher

From our school we strive to create a culture that honors and embodies the value of interdependence so we can live in a harmonious relationship with one another and with Nature. We seek to build a culture that respects and embraces differences and acts against bias and injustice. 

Every day we gather at circle to sing songs, share our feelings, listen to stories, resolve conflicts, tune into what’s alive outside and inside of us and choose how we are going to spend the day through consensual agreement. We also instill a sense of reverence for all things to deepen our sense of reciprocity with Mother Nature and to enhance a strong and loving connection with our environment and home. By coexisting, playing and learning about the trees, the plants, the rocks, the water, the soil, the mushrooms, the Sun, the Moon, the Sky, the creatures around us we start to become aware of our innate sense of kinship in this web of life where we belong, where we are all connected. We are eager to co-create a school community that embodies these values and creates positive change that ripples outward far and wide.

Madre Tierra, Madre maestra

Des de nuestra escuela nos esforzamos por crear una cultura que honre y encarne el valor de la interdependencia para que podamos vivir en una relación armoniosa entre nosotres y con la Naturaleza. También buscamos construir una cultura que respete y acepte las diferencias y actúe contra los prejuicios y la injusticia.

Todos los días nos reunimos en círculo para cantar canciones, compartir nuestros sentimientos, escuchar historias, resolver conflictos, sintonizarnos con lo que está vivo fuera y dentro de nosotres y elegir cómo vamos a pasar el día a través de un acuerdo consensuado. También inculcamos un sentido de reverencia por todas las cosas para profundizar nuestro sentido de reciprocidad con la Madre Naturaleza y promover una conexión fuerte y amorosa con nuestro medio ambiente y hogar.

Al coexistir, jugar y aprender sobre los árboles, las plantas, las rocas, el agua, la tierra, el sol, los hongos, la luna, el cielo, las criaturas que nos rodean, comenzamos a tomar conciencia de nuestro sentido innato de parentesco en esta red de vida de la que formamos parte, donde todos estamos conectados. Estamos emocionadas por co crear una comunidad escolar que incorpore todos estos valores y que las esporas de la comunidad se esparzan y se continúen multiplicando.

Planting Seeds of Change

Our work in the forest school focuses on the recognition that the Earth is not only our home, but also our main teacher. We do our job with the awareness that we are on the occupied territory of Huchuin, the ancestral homeland of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan, now known as the East Bay. We acknowledge and honor the Chochenyo Ohlone people for the continued tending and restoring the sacred relationship with their ancestral land. Through our work with children, we also commit to heal and transform the legacies of colonization, genocide, and patriarchy. Our school advocates for a culture where diversity of races and ethnicities can co exist together in integrity and harmony while we continue to dismantle whiteness and privilege.

We are a school community where Black Lives Matter, Indigenous lives matter, LGTBQ lives matter, Non binary lives matter, Women’s lives matter, Migrant lives matter, Houseless lives matter. It is a must to educate our young children with new eyes, new heart, and new hands so we can break the cycle of violence, racism and inequality and transform it into a cycle of equity, justice, community and love, and support future generations to integrate those values and fierce compassion at the center of their hearts.

Plantando Semillas de Cambio

Nuestro trabajo en la escuela de bosque se enfoca en el reconocimiento de que la Tierra no es solo nuestro hogar, sino nuestra principal maestra. Hacemos nuestro trabajo con la conciencia de que estamos en el territorio ocupado de Huchuin, la patria ancestral de las Aldeas Confederadas de Lisjan, ahora conocido como el Este de la Bahia. Reconocemos y honramos al pueblo Chochenyo Ohlone que está haciendo por continuar cuidando y restaurando la relación sagrada con su tierra ancestral. A través de nuestro trabajo con les niñes, también nos comprometemos a sanar y transformar los legados de la colonización, el genocidio y el patriarcado. Nuestra escuela aboga por una cultura donde la diversidad de razas y etnias puedan coexistir juntas en integridad y armonía mientras continuamos desmantelando la raça blanca y su privilegio.

Somos una comunidad escolar donde las vidas de las personas de color importan, las vidas de las personas indígenas importan, las vidas de las personas LGTBQ importan, las vidas no binarias importan, las vidas de las mujeres importan, las vidas de les migrantes important, las vidas de las personas sin hogar importan. Es imprescindible educar a les niñes pequeñes con ojos nuevos, corazón nuevo y manos nuevas para que podamos romper el ciclo de la violencia, racismo y desigualdad y transformarlo en un ciclo de equidad, justicia, comunidad, amor, y apoyar a las generaciones futuras para que integren esos valores y la compasión feroz en el centro de sus corazones.

Whole Child Education

Our educational philosophy has been inspired by different kinds of pedagogies, one of which is Waldorf Education by Rudolf Steiner which holds three fundamental forces in the development of the child: the power of imagination, a sense of truth and a feeling of responsibility for their community and the world.

Our intention is to be the nurturers of children’s innate curiosity, imagination and wonder so that it may remain intact. Our approach as educators is to observe, listen, model, redirect, facilitate, inquire, learn and play joyfully together with them.

Our forest school takes a “hands-on” educational approach and is free play-based. We know that children learn through play and by following their own curiosity so we, as educators, pay attention to their emerging inspiration and create space and freedom to follow those leads as they arrive. What looks like play is actually self-directed learning. By creating a sense of safety and fostering a sense of belonging, children develop a healthy relationships to self, one another, their community and Nature.

Educación Integral del niñe

Nuestra filosofía educativa se ha inspirado en diferentes tipos de pedagogías, una de ellas es la Educación Waldorf de Rudolf Steiner que sostiene tres fuerzas fundamentales en el desarrollo del niñe: el poder de la imaginación, el sentido de la verdad y el sentimiento de responsabilidad por su comunidad y el mundo.

Nuestra intención es la de ser las cuidadoras de la curiosidad, la imaginación y el asombro innato de les niñes para que permanezcan intactas. Nuestro enfoque como educadoras es observar, escuchar, modelar, redirigir, facilitar, indagar, aprender y jugar alegremente con ellos.

Nuestra escuela de bosque adopta un enfoque educativo "práctico" y basado en el juego libre. Creemos que les niñes saben lo que quieren hacer y aprender, así que las educadoras prestan atención a la inspiración emergente y crean espacio y libertad para seguir esas pistas a medida que llegan. Lo que parece un juego es en realidad un aprendizaje autodirigido. Además, al crear una sensación de seguridad y fomentar un sentido de pertenencia, les niñes desarrollan relaciones saludables consigo mismes, entre elles, con su comunidad y con la Naturaleza.
